The message is crystal clear: there is no escape from the long arm of the law.
In a groundbreaking move, FBI agents from various field offices have taken the initiative to approach buyers and warn them about the potential overdose risks associated with online drug purchases. These drugs are often disguised to resemble prescription medication, but are synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, which claim more American lives annually than the combined death toll of the Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars.

According to CyberScoop, Monopoly Market has been operating on the dark web since 2019 and has become a central hub for criminals to trade drugs. It is estimated that the criminals have conducted numerous sales of illegal products and services throughout Europe and the United States.

Following a global operation coordinated by the European Union law enforcement agency Europol, a significant number of individuals were arrested in connection with a cybercrime group that allegedly stole millions from major corporations and medical facilities. The United States had the highest number of arrests with 153, followed by the United Kingdom with 55 and Germany with 52. This development is particularly noteworthy as it occurs just a few months after the same group was suspected of being involved in the sale of illegal drugs on the dark web.

SpecTor, a joint operation involving nine countries including the US, UK, Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Brazil, and Switzerland, was carried out to tackle the issue of dark web drugs. The operation was led by US Attorney General Merrick Garland and aimed to shut down illegal drug markets operating on the dark web. In a similar move last year, Germany successfully closed down the servers of Hydra, a notorious Russian darknet marketplace, and seized approximately 23 million dollars worth of Bitcoin.
The Hague-based agency compiled intelligence on dark web drug trade using evidence gathered by Germany, who claimed to have taken down the criminal infrastructure of the marketplace in December 2021.
